Toward the end of The Edge of Heaven, an exquisitely mysterious feature by the German-born Turkish filmmaker Fatih Akin, a young man and an older woman meet at the intersection of coincidence and fate.
"What shall we drink to?" the man asks. "To death," the woman replies. The long arm of coincidence seems dominant at first, for the plot evokes the intricate connections of Short Cuts, Crash or Babel. But The Edge of Heaven is something new, a narrative in which the convergences are intriguing but the gaps are haunting. It's not so much about how separate lives touch and interact as it is about lives that are changed and enriched by missed connections. The Edge of Heaven allows for the existence of good will, and celebrates forgiveness with ineffable tenderness. - Joe Morgenstern (edited) Sponsored by Subaru |

This was an interesting film. I enjoyed much of the film. It had some slow parts, but it was not as bad for me as it was for some of my friends. I think a large part of this film was lost due to my lack of understanding all the geographic and cultural dynamics going on in the film. Thing like Turkish politics. Turkish problems with Kurds. Germand and Turkish relations.... I think I need a few days of study and talking to natives before watching this again.
