SUMMARY:The Amazing Truth about Queen Raquela
DESCRIPTION:A Filipina “lady-boy” blessed with extraordinary beauty and g
race\, Raquela Rios makes her living by walking the streets and serving
a clientele with exotic tastes. Alas\, this self-proclaimed queen dreams
of far bigger and better things\, so when she’s recruited by a fellow t
ranssexual to join the lucrative world of Internet porn\, Raquela puts o
 n a nurse’s uniform and dives in headfirst. \n \nHer online popularity s
kyrockets\, and soon she’s off living a life of odd adventures — traveli
 ng to Iceland\, working in a fish factory and\, finally\, fulfilling a l
ifelong dream to see Paris. And once the site’s New York-based owner tak
es a shine to her and visits her in the City of Light\, Raquela may even
  find true love.
\n \nPart fact and part fairytale\, Olaf de Fleur Joha
nnesson’s dazzling docudrama blends gritty vérité and fictional flights
of fancy to chronicle this truly transtastic character’s life. Actors tr
ade lines with sex-industry professionals\, key moments are recreated wi
th a certain dreamy liberty\, and you’re never sure whether you’re watch
ing reality or fantasy. What’s never in doubt is the sense of empowermen
t that Raquela (playing herself) brings to every encounter and interacti
on in which she engages. \n \nWinner of this year’s prestigious Teddy Aw
ard at the Berlin Film Festival\, Johannesson’s tribute to Rios truly ea
rns the titular adjective\; it’s amazing from start to finish. All hail

SUMMARY:The Edge of Heaven
DESCRIPTION:Toward the end of The Edge of Heaven \, an exquisitely myste
rious feature by the German-born Turkish filmmaker Fatih Akin\, a young
man and an older woman meet at the intersection of coincidence and fate.
\n \n"What shall we drink to?" the man asks. \n \n"To death\," the woma

SUMMARY:Steam
DESCRIPTION:Three very different women weave a fragile bond at their loca
l steam room\, where they hope the hot water vapor might wash away their
loneliness\, confusion and fear.\n \nDuring her first year at college\,
Elizabeth questions her sexual identity and struggles to break free fro
m her strict Catholic parents. Middle-aged Laurie is a single mother dea
ling with the psychological games played by her ex-husband and the poten
tial problems in a relationship with a much younger man. And recent Acad
emy Award nominee Ruby Dee (American Gangster) gives another award-worth
y performance as Doris\, an older woman facing feelings of despair and e
mptiness after the death of her husband.\n \nUnbeknownst to them\, these
women share many of the same struggles and joys and separately learn to
find strength\, joy and beauty in their unique circumstances. By interw
eaving the stories of their individual journeys\, director Kyle Schickne
r shows how age\, race\, class and religion have little to do with matte
rs of the heart — ultimately\, we all want the same things: love and hap
piness.\n \nAt times playful and uplifting and other times heartbreaking
\, Steam speaks to the universality of human experience and the resilien
t spirit that allows us to rebound from struggle and emerge triumphant.

SUMMARY:Trinidad
DESCRIPTION:In 1969\, Dr. Stanley Biber began conducting genital-reassign
ment surgeries in Trinidad\, Colorado. Since then\, thousands of patient
s have passed through Trinidad\, and the once prosperous coal mining and
ranching town is now fondly known as the “Sex Change Capitol of the Wor
ld.” After Biber's death\, his practice was handed over to his former pa
tient\, Dr. Marci Bowers\, who has enhanced the procedure to near perfec
tion.\n \nThis compassionate and compelling documentary follows Bowers a
nd two of her patients\, both at different stages of their sexual transf
ormation from male to female\, as they struggle with the sadly-not-surpr
ising intolerance of small-town morals and the challenge of reconciling
their new personas with the expectations of their spouses and children.
 It's a delicate transition for everyone involved—the women themselves\,
their families\, and their adopted community\, which is still struggling
to accept the fact that the economic growth from this new industry is t
he only thing keeping Trinidad on the map.\n \n- Abby Kavanaugh\, Los An

SUMMARY:Wrangler\, Anatomy of an Icon
DESCRIPTION:There have been dozens of gay porn stars\, but only one Jack
Wrangler. Bursting onto the scene in the early ’70s\, he wasn’t the typi

\nBuff\, masculine and clearly comfortable in his own skin\, Wrangler w

SUMMARY:Pansy Division: Life in a Gay Rock Band
DESCRIPTION:In the early 1990s\, Pansy Division founder and front man Jon
Ginoli and bassist Chris Freeman took up their instruments as a battle
cry against the dance music that dominated the gay scene. The moment for
a queer punk band couldn’t have been more timely\; San Francisco was ju
st waking from the previous decade’s losses\, and the in-your-face direc
t actions by ACT UP and Queer Nation shared punk music’s DIY ethos.\n \n
Director Michael Carmona chronicles the band’s role as a pioneer in the
queercore movement\, from humble gigs in gay dive bars to singing their
homo-anthems to thousands of screaming teens on a national tour with Gre
en Day. Along the way the band attempts to find a permanent drummer and
struggles to gain exposure without watering down their message.\n \nThe
film also plays like a time capsule of another era\, so put on your Doc
Martens and your cut-off jeans\, slap some DayGlo stickers on your nippl
 es\, and rock out with Pansy Division!\n \n- Dennis Conroy\, Frameline32

DESCRIPTION:Hollywood is a tough town\, but struggling actress Jamie thin
ks she knows what casting directors want. She joins the L.A. masses in h
er best skirt\, heels\, and jewelry at audition after audition hoping to
catch her big break. There’s just one problem – Jamie’s playing a chara
cter before she even steps in front of the camera. She’s a spiky-haired
butch dyke\, not a frilly femme fatale! And judging from the callbacks s
he gets (or rather lack thereof) it shows.\n \nWhen Jamie finds out that
her roommate’s pet-cat-actor Howard is getting more work than she is\,
Jamie decides to throw in the acting towel\, but she is determined to go

. Much to her surprise\, she is called into the producer’s office and of

Underscoring his every move is the fear of being forgotten\, or worse:

x has been brought up female. But now that her body is changing— and she
’s faced with the prospect of “corrective” surgery that her father refus
ed to allow when she was born – she’s beginning to wonder.\n \nThings co
me to a head when her mother surprises Alex with a visit from a plastic
surgeon and his family\, and Alex finds herself being pushed to make a c
hoice she’s not sure she wants to make. Her attraction to the doctor’s t
eenage son Alvaro just makes things all the more confusing.\n \nUnder fi
rst-time director Lucia Puenzo’s sensitive direction\, Inés Flores bring
s Alex to the screen in an understated but powerful performance that wil
l leave you thinking about the nature of gender and the choices we are f
 orced to make.\n \n- Mark Page\, Frameline32 (edited)\n \n Sponsored by

SUMMARY:Mulligans
DESCRIPTION:When beer-swilling\, sports-playing Tyler Davidson (Derek Jam
es) invites his college buddy Chase (the sultry Canadian-born Charlie Da
vid) to spend the summer holidays with the picture-perfect Davidson fami
ly\, things just don’t click between Chase and the hot local girls. Soo
n\, Chase comes out\, and Tyler unexpectedly has to cope with having a g
ay best friend. But while Tyler’s doing an admirable job of coming to te
rms with his own discomfort\, a few more surprises begin to brew.\n \nIn
a brilliantly turned subplot\, Tyler’s mother Stacey (Thea Gill from "Q
ueer as Folk") yanks Birdy – the family’s precocious eight-year-old – aw
ay from her carnal explorations with a local boy and also discovers her
husband Nathan (Dan Payne) locking lips with someone else. \n \nSet amid
the casual\, polite homophobia of the upper middle class\, Mulligans
is a fresh and multi-layered take on the coming-out genre. With grace an
d sensitivity\, director Chip Hale shows that a confession of queerness
doesn’t have to end relationships\, even if it changes things forever.\n

DESCRIPTION:As the gay outcast at an all-boys prep school\, Timothy (oh-s

dsome rugby jock. But his are no ordinary flights of fancy\; they're mus
ical theater extravaganzas\, complete with show-stopping songs\, dazzlin

know that theater is his destiny. With a voice like honey\, he's cast as

 oles\, and what could be more hetero-threatening than that?!\n \nAside f
